Akio Nagasawa Gallery Ginza is pleased to present ichi-go ichi-e, a solo exhibition by Daniel Blaufuks.
Daniel Blaufuks is a Portuguese artist whose practice centers on photography and video. He has presented his work in a wide range of formats, including books, installations, and films, and has held exhibitions internationally. His ongoing artistic inquiry focuses on the relationship between time and space, as well as the points at which private and public memory intersect.
In 2025, Blaufuks presented his work at the Portugal Pavilion of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, marking his first visit to Japan. This exhibition introduces photographs and collage works created during his stay, produced daily as a visual “diary” while traveling through various locations across Japan.
To coincide with the exhibition, a new publication titled ichi-go ichi-e, bringing together these works, will be published by Akio Nagasawa Publishing. This book follows Attempting Exhaustion (2017) and marks his second publication with the publisher.
Through both the exhibition and the accompanying book, visitors are invited to encounter an aspect of “Japan” as perceived by Daniel Blaufuks on this special occasion.

Daniel Blaufuks has explored the relationship between public and private memory, a constant theme of inquiry in his work as a visual artist. His practice is pursued chiefly through photography and video, and presented in installations, books, and films.
In 2007, he published Sob Céus Estranhos (Tinta-da-china)—based on his 2002 film Under Strange Skies—which earned him the award for Best Photography Book of the Year in the international category at PhotoEspaña. He was also awarded a prize in 2007 for his work on a concentration camp in the Czech Republic, later presented in the book Terezín (Steidl, 2010) and the film As If (2014).
In 2016, he won the AICA/MC/Millennium BCP Visual Arts Award for the exhibitions Attempting Exhaustion and Léxico. More recently, he has published Não Pai (Tinta-da-china, 2019) and Lisboa Clichê (Tinta-da-china, 2021).
He holds a PhD from the University of Wales, for which he wrote a thesis on the relationship between photography and cinema in the work of W. G. Sebald and Georges Perec, and on the themes of memory and the Holocaust. His films—described as “expanded photographs”—have been shown at various film festivals. His latest works examine the resistance to German occupation in Brittany and colonialism in São Tomé and Príncipe, while also continuing his ongoing non-diary The Days Are Numbered.

Attempting Exhaustion
Between 2009 and 2016, I photographed a table and a window in my kitchen in Lisbon.
I was first attracted by its silence, later by how the objects received the light, and, finally, by their geometrical composition.
I could't help noticing, more and more, how things repeated themselves without truly repeating themselves.
Little changes, almost invisible transformations happened every day, according to weather and season.
