Photographs of butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata taken by Kenji Ishiguro in 1970.
Published to coincide with Ishiguro’s solo exhibition at Akio Nagasawa Gallery Ginza, opening on Wednesday, October 14.
The book presents the complete series, including works that have remained unpublished for many years.
On the day of the photo shooting, I brought a 160 cm x 160 cm furoshiki.
A furoshiki is a uniquely Japanese wrapping cloth that you use for packing up things by tying its four corners.
Mr. Hijikata agreed to be packed up.
The tied-up furoshiki on the floor of Asbestos-kan looked like a package that someone had forgotten there.
Quietly, yet fiercely, it unwrapped into Butoh.
