Akio Nagasawa Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the Kuniyoshi Kaneko Photo Exhibition.

Discovered by French literature scholar Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, Kuniyoshi Kaneko was an extraordinary artist whose comet-like rise began with his debut in 1967. The sweet and decadent painting style he employed in his unique, somewhat old-fashioned human portraits and other works catapulted him to instant fame.
He went on to receive enthusiastic support for his cover illustrations for Eureka and Fujin Koron magazines, as well as illustrations for the Shinchosha edition of Alice in Wonderland. In addition to painting, Kaneko’s activities encompassed a broad range of genres, including woodblock printing, scenic art, and kimono design.

This exhibition is the first comprehensive showcase of Kuniyoshi Kaneko’s photographic work.
Needless to say, these photographs showing Kaneko’s favorite types of models on stages exude an erotic air mixed with a fantastic kind of beauty. Enjoy an array of richly hued color pictures, gritty black-and-white photographs, and nude portraits informed by Kaneko’s own unique sense of beauty.

Please also visit the Komiyama Book Store in Tokyo, where a selection of Kaneko’s polaroids are on display concurrently with this exhibition.
