宮島達男

Born 1957 in Tokyo. Completed his post-graduate studies at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1986. Participated in the “Aperto '88” exhibition introducing young artists’ works at the Venice Biennale, where he went on to represent Japan in the main exhibition in ’99, and has since been working energetically in Japan and abroad.
He continues to create works using digital counters, based on the three concepts “ongoing transformation”, “various connections” and “perpetual continuation” that indicate aspects of continuity, eternity and relation between time and the cycle of human life. He is actively involved also in the persimmon project “Toki no sosei (resurrection of time”, in which children around the world are invited to grow plants from seeds extracted from persimmon trees that were exposed to radiation after the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki.
